Wildlife charity WWF Germany is being praised for its inventive use of the Twitter X logo to highlight the threat of extinction facing many of the world’s animals. Recently, Twitter CEO Elon Musk made the bizarre choice to change the recognisable Twitter logo depicting a blue bird to a very forgettable “X” in a move that has baffled industry experts. Since 2006, Twitter has had some variation of a blue bird as its logo and advertising company McCann Germany came up with a concept for WWF’s campaign to highlight extinction by using them. The camping depicted the five different iterations of the Twitter logo throughout the years, from the very first logo in 2006 to the one people came to know and love in 2012 – the simple portrait of a blue bird. Next in line was the new 2023 Twitter logo ‘X’, showing the very stark end of the classic bird Twitter logo. Text on the image read: “Protect our wildlife before it's too late!” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The very creative campaign has drawn a huge amount of praise for being simple yet effective. “This is brilliant,” one person wrote. Someone else commented: “Well played.” Another said: “Beautiful (and simple) idea from WWF Germany. Credit to McCann Germany.” “Brilliant real time marketing by WWF, Germany,” praised another. One Twitter user said: “Kudos to WWF for timely and imaginative work. Props to McCann Germany as well.” According to WWF Germany, around a million species are at risk of going extinct in the next few decades if ecosystems continue to be destroyed. People are getting less happy with their cars – and it appears to be the fault of new technology and design innovations, according to landmark research. Customer satisfaction is falling with people pointing to a range of issues including the exterior design of the car. But particular frustration is with infotainment systems, with people turning away from them as ways of listening to music and get around. Only 56 per cent of car owners prefer to use their car’s in-built system to play audio, for instance, down from 70 per cent in 2020. Less than half of car owners prefer to use integrated systems for functions like phone calls, voice recognition and navigation. Instead, users are presumably using external systems such as their phones. In recent years, technologies such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have made it possible to mirror those screens, rather than use the built-in and often complicated software provided by car manufacturers. That is according to the US Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study, run by JD Power. It is the first time in the 28 year history of the study that customer satisfaction has fallen two years in a row – and could point to a range of issues in the car market. Satisfaction is counted on a 1000-point scale. This year, it was measured at 845, which was down two points from last year, and three points from the year before. “The decline in consecutive years might look small, but it’s an indicator that larger issues may lie under the surface,” said Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at JD Power, in a statement. “Despite the technology and design innovations that manufacturers put into new vehicles, owners are lukewarm about them. While innovations like charging pads, vehicle apps and advanced audio features should enhance an owner’s experience, this is not the case when problems are experienced. “This downward trajectory of satisfaction should be a warning sign to manufacturers that they need to better understand what owners really want in their new vehicles.” The survey also found a decline in satisfaction with some tech focused car companies. Tesla remains one of the higher performing brands but saw its score at 878, down nine points from last year, when the company was first included in the study. The study was based on almost 85,000 owners of new cars who were surveyed after owning the vehicle for 90 days. It ran between February and May of this year. Twitter has added video calling – and left it turned on by default. The feature is now being officially rolled out, Elon Musk confirmed. He said it was an “early version” of a tool he has been hinting at for a year. Video calls are part of Elon Musk’s plans to make Twitter, which he has renamed X, into the “everything app”, offering a wide array of different functionality. For now, video calls are limited to the iOS app, and appear to be rolling out slowly. But they are also switched on by default. The system means that all accounts are liable to receive calls from accounts you follow, or those run by people whose number you have in your address book. To be able to call someone, they must have sent at least one direct message to your account. Users have the option to change that setting, however, either to switch it off or to change who has the ability to make calls. From the direct message settings, users can either disable it entirely or change it so that they can receive calls from people in your address book, from people you follow, or from all “verified” users. Making phone calls is limited to premium subscribers, who pay the monthly subscription for what was once called Twitter Blue. It can be done by opening up the DM menu to start a conversation with someone. If the feature is enabled, then a phone icon should show within the direct message conversation, and tapping audio or video will start the relevant kind of call. Users will receive a notification that they are being called, and will get another telling them they missed the call if they do not pick up.
