Apple has released iOS 17, its major new update for the iPhone. It comes alongside upgrades for almost every other platform: new software for the Apple Watch, the iPad, Apple TV and even AirPods. Only the Mac is leftout, and will receive its own update next week. Most of the new upgrades focus on communication. There are improvements to Messages, the Phone app and FaceTime, for instance – but iOS 17 also adds interactive widgets and wallpapers to the iPhone. It also brings a significant change in a new feature called “StandBy”. That lets users charge their phone on its side and bring up a whole different page, which is intended to be useful on a bedside or kitchen surface. The iPad gets many of the same improvements, although it does not have the StandBy update. It does however bring significant redesigns to the lock screen. The Watch also gets a redesign, with a new look intended to make it easier to swipe through widgets and use apps more quickly. And even the Apple TV and AirPods get new features. The set-top box can now make FaceTime calls itself, and the AirPods get a new adaptive audio mode that aims to block out annoying sounds with noise cancellation but keep important ones. All of the new updates can be downloaded by opening the Settings app and then clicking the “General” option, and choosing software update. Apple devices will also look to start the update themselves. The new features were revealed in June, during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference event, in which it also showed off its new Vision Pro headset. The update also comes days ahead of the release of the new iPhone 15. That will go on sale on Friday. China’s largest battery maker for electric vehicles has launched an aviation division in preparation to begin mass production of electric planes, according to reports. Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), which supplies batteries for Tesla, claims to have achieved the “holy grail” energy density required for commercial electric aircraft of 500 Watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg). The company announced the feat at the Auto Shanghai trade fair earlier this year, with chief scientist Wu Kai claiming that it was poised to begin production of a commercially viable battery for electric aircraft. “With an energy density of up to 500Wh/kg, it can achieve a high energy density and a high level of safety at the same time in a creative manner, opening up a brand-new electrification scenario of passenger aircrafts,” the company said in a statement at the time. “CATL can achieve mass production of condensed battery for electric vehicles in a short period of time.” CATL has now launched a joint venture with state-owned plane manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), Yicai Global reported, following four years of research into the technology. The advent of electric aircraft has become a realistic prospect in recent years following several major battery breakthroughs that have the potential to overcome cost and capacity limitations. Israel-based startup Eviation completed the first flight of an electric commuter plane last year, taking off from an airport in Washington before touching down eight minutes later. The Alice aircraft is capable of transporting nine passengers and their luggage, or a tonne of cargo, and has been hailed as the first battery-powered plane viable for short-haul commercial journeys of up to 645km (400 miles). Regional airlines and logistics firms in the US have already ordered more than 200 Alice planes, with Eviation aiming to fulfil the orders by 2026. Russia is set to ban iPhones for government officials and state employees after accusing Apple of helping the US government conduct espionage operations. Government officials at Russia’s trade ministry will be banned from using iPhones and other Apple products for “work purposes” from July 17, the Financial Times reported. The trade ministry’s ban includes emailed correspondence relating to work activities, said its deputy head Vasily Osmako. The digital development ministry said it will follow suit, while state-owned company Rostec, which is under Western sanctions, said it has already introduced a ban on Apple products. It comes after the Kremlin told officials to stop using Apple products in March, citing fears they were vulnerable to US hacking. “Officials truly believe that Americans can use their equipment for wiretapping,” Andrey Soldatov, a Russia security and intelligence services expert, told the Financial Times. Russia’s Federal Security Service claimed in June it had uncovered a “spying operation by US intelligence agencies using Apple devices”. However, the FSB provided no evidence. The security service claimed several thousand iPhones with Russian SIM cards or registered with Moscow diplomatic missions in Nato countries were “infected” with monitoring software that indicated Apple’s “close co-operation” with the US National Security Agency. “Everyone in the presidential administration is aware that the iPhone is a completely transparent device and its use for official purposes is unacceptable and prohibited,” Dmitry Peskov, president Putin’s spokesperson, said last month. Apple has denied working with US intelligence services. The tech company said it “has never worked with any government to build a backdoor into any Apple product, and never will”. The ban will not impact regular consumers. Apple pulled out of Russia following last year’s invasion of Ukraine. However, Apple products continue to be imported to Russia from other countries.
