Spotify has increased the subscription prices of its premium plan in many parts of the world, with an individual plan going up by £1 in the UK. The price rise comes following Spotify chief Daniel Ek suggesting during an April earnings call that there could be an increase in subscription fee soon. The changes also come as other streaming platforms, including Netflix and Apple Music raised their subscription prices recently. “The market landscape has continued to evolve since we launched. So that we can keep innovating, we are changing our Premium prices across a number of markets around the world,” the audio steaming giant noted in a blog post on Monday. “These updates will help us continue to deliver value to fans and artists on our platform,” it said. In the US, the company said the premium plan for individuals would now cost $10.99 (£8.55) a month up from the charge of $9.99 (£7.77) it has levied since the platform’s launch in 2011. Along with the price rise for a single individual premium subscription plan, the cost of Duo is increasing from $12.99 (£10.11) to $14.99 (£11.6), and for the Family plan from $15.99 (£12.44) to $16.99 (£13.22), and the one for students from $4.99 (£3.88) to $5.99 (£4.66). “We will raise it and that price increase will go down well because we’re delivering a lot of value for our customers,” Mr Ek said, noting that the changes would happen “when the timing is right.” Spotify said users would be given a “one-month grace period” before the new prices take effect. Twitter has added video calling – and left it turned on by default. The feature is now being officially rolled out, Elon Musk confirmed. He said it was an “early version” of a tool he has been hinting at for a year. Video calls are part of Elon Musk’s plans to make Twitter, which he has renamed X, into the “everything app”, offering a wide array of different functionality. For now, video calls are limited to the iOS app, and appear to be rolling out slowly. But they are also switched on by default. The system means that all accounts are liable to receive calls from accounts you follow, or those run by people whose number you have in your address book. To be able to call someone, they must have sent at least one direct message to your account. Users have the option to change that setting, however, either to switch it off or to change who has the ability to make calls. From the direct message settings, users can either disable it entirely or change it so that they can receive calls from people in your address book, from people you follow, or from all “verified” users. Making phone calls is limited to premium subscribers, who pay the monthly subscription for what was once called Twitter Blue. It can be done by opening up the DM menu to start a conversation with someone. If the feature is enabled, then a phone icon should show within the direct message conversation, and tapping audio or video will start the relevant kind of call. Car salesman based in Arizona Andy Elliot is going viral due to his unusual hiring requirement - all his employees need a six pack. He went viral on social media after a video of him sharing his standards for his employees at a conference was posted to Instagram. Speaking to an audience at the conference he says, “my entire team, if you don’t have a six pack , you don’t work for us. […] it’s called a standard. How about we raise them?” The video has over 88,000 likes, but the majority of comments took to mocking Elliot for his hiring method. One user wrote, “can’t work for me if you’re bald. Grow hair or get out,” for context, Elliot is bald. “Absolute cringe. I cringe every time this guy shows up on my feed,” wrote another. “Such an awful opinion,” said a different user. In a statement to the New York Post, Elliot clarified his words, “it’s not that we don’t hire anybody with a six-pack,” he explained. “We just have a standard that says if you’re gonna be a mentor to others in our company you’re gonna be your standard.” Elliot also seemingly is unbothered by those who disagree with him. “I mean, those are people sitting in their mom’s basement, you know, commenting or by the the way, or they’re people that are sitting there wishing they could kill it in life, just making excuses and not taking action,” he said.
