Scientists who were attempting to map an abandoned ant hill didn't expect to find a mega-city when they shot the hill full of cement, but that's exactly what they discovered. Over three days, scientists pumped 10 tons of cement into the empty ant hill to map its networks. After the cement dried, they dug for weeks around it. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The excavation revealed an incredibly impressive, intricate, and bizarre ant mega-city. The mega-city was a truly colossal undertaking. A video revealed that the ants created the structure by displacing 40 tons of dirt. And it really is a mega-city. The ants networked to disposal pits and fungus gardens. Each tunnel was designed to ensure thorough ventilation and reduce transport time. The narrator disclosed the truth. That despite the complex nature of the mega-city, there was no single architect of any - but it was down to the collective will of the colony. "Everything looks like it has been designed by an architect a single mind but of course, that isn’t true," they said. Tesla has unveiled the latest version of its humanoid robot, demonstrating its ability to adapt to its environment and even perform yoga poses. It is significant progress for the Optimus bot, which was unable to walk unassisted just one year ago. “Optimus is now capable of self-calibrating its arms and legs,” stated a video showing off the robot. “Accurately calibrated, Optimus learns various tasks more efficiently... For example, it can now sort blocks by colour fully autonomously. And it does so while dealing with the dynamic reality of our world.” Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared the video on X, formerly known as Twitter, with the caption “progress”. Mr Musk has previously said that Tesla’s humanoid robot has the potential to be “more significant” than the company’s car business. It is being developed to replace low-skilled labour, with its humanoid form designed to allow it to carry out human tasks, ranging from shopping in a supermarket to working on factory production lines. “Essentially in the future, physical work will be a choice,” Mr Musk said when the robot was first announced in 2021. “It has profound implications for the economy, given that the economy at its foundational level is labour.” New details from the tech billionaire’s authorised biography also revealed that he told employees that Optimus was the key to turning Tesla into a $10 trillion company. Tesla is yet to give any information about Optimus’s price or release date, though early versions are expected to be tested on the company’s vehicle production line. At last year’s Tesla AI Day, Mr Musk said deliveries could take place within three-to-five years, though his estimates are typically overly ambitious. Tesla is also currently undertaking a recruitment drive to help speed up the development of Optimus, with more than 50 positions listed on its website relating to robotics. Instagram Threads could become a billion-person app, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg has said. The chief executive hit out against predictions that the app was losing steam, saying that it continued to keep its momentum. “Threads also remains a compelling long-term opportunity, and we’re excited to build on the strong product momentum we have going into next year,” the company’s chief financial officer Susan Li said. Meta launched Threads three months ago, as part of an attempt to take over from Twitter. It became the fastest growing app in the world, seemingly helped by dissatisfaction with Twitter, but has lost some of its attention amid criticism of the app’s design and features. But Meta said as it revealed its latest results that it was still focusing on Threads and expected it to grow. Eventually, it could have a billion people, Mr Zuckerberg suggested. “I’ve thought for a long time there should be a billion-person public conversations app that is a bit more positive,” Mr Zuckerberg said in the earnings call. “I think that if we keep at this for a few more years, then I think we have a good chance of achieving our vision there.” Instagram boss Adam Mosseri said on Threads that the company will be focusing on support for Europe – where it remains unavailable owing to privacy concerns – as well as better compatibility with other apps and Instagram. Mr Zuckerberg also reiterated his focus on the metaverse and augmented reality, another key focus for the company that has led to some criticism from those who claim it has failed to live up to its potential. That technology, alongside artificial intelligence, remains the company’s long-term focus, he said. Generative artificial intelligence will get more important in the future, Mr Zuckerberg said. But he pointed to existing AI features that power the feeds inside Meta’s apps, for instance.
