AI breakthrough could help us build solar panels out of ‘miracle material’, scientists say
Artificial intelligence is helping engineers build solar panels out of a “miracle material”. Scientists have long been excited about the possibility of new perovskite tandem solar cells, which could help bring the vastly improved efficiency of perovskite to mass production. They have an efficiency of more than 33 per cent, dramatically higher than conventional silicon solar cells. Those tandem solar cells come with a host of other benefits, too. They rely on inexpensive raw materials and can be made relatively easily. Engineers have faced a problem, however, in making them cheaply and at scale. To make them efficient, manufacturers need to make a very thin, high-grade layer of perovskite. Doing that is difficult. It relies on a complex process that varies significantly, seemingly with little explanation. Trying to improve that process has often relied on a gradual process of trying out new possibilities through trial and error. Now scientists have successfully built a new system that uses artificial intelligence to try and work out how to build those layers better. Instead of picking through video recordings to work out how different layers work, researchers were able to train a computer system to spot the hidden signs of good and bad coatings. After the system was built, it was able to be used better understand how to change the production to make it more efficient, researchers said. “These are extremely exciting results,” said Ulrich W Paetzold, a researcher from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, who worked on the new study. “Thanks to the combined use of AI, we have a solid clue and know which parameters need to be changed in the first place to improve production. “Now we are able to conduct our experiments in a more targeted way and are no longer forced to look blindfolded for the needle in a haystack. This is a blueprint for follow-up research that also applies to many other aspects of energy research and materials science.” An article describing the breakthrough, ‘Discovering Process Dynamics for Scalable Perovskite Solar Cell Manufacturing with Explainable AI’, is published in Advanced Materials. Influencer Paige Spiranac calls out ‘hypocrites’ over semi-naked video
Golf influencer Paige Spiranac has hit out at “‘hypocrites” who enjoyed a performance of “semi-naked” men before a baseball game. Spiranac has often spoken about the negative attitudes she faces as a former professional golfer and influencer posting supposedly ‘risque’ content on Instagram. The 30-year-old shared her own experiences in a new Twitter post, claiming that people online were hypocritical for cheering a performance of men dancing topless while at the same time “harshly treating” her content. Spiranac posted a video of the dancing duo named “the Savannah Party Animals” who appeared before a recent baseball game wearing only trousers and cowboy hats. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Giving her take, she wrote: "Interesting how different the reaction is online when men choose to show off their bodies. “Not one comment on this video calling them attention w****s or s***s. Just a ton of women saying baseball is now their favourite sport but those same women harshly judge me. The hypocrisy lol." Spiranac has spoken about being judged by members of the golfing world in the past, including when she offered a set of clubs to a charity auction – only to be rejected because of her “cleavage”. Speaking on her podcast Playing-A-Round with Paige, she said: “I wanted to help this charity out and I wanted to give them free golf clubs. "The guy wrote back and said, ‘We would love to but, because of the way our board members view you, you can’t help out’. I want to give back to these kids who don’t have anything, because I grew up not having anything. And I can’t even f***ing do that because of my cleavage.” Spiranac also recently clapped back at a TikTok troll who accused her of "insulting men" with her outfit choice. The golf influencer was wearing a grey bodysuit as she demonstrated to her 1.4m followers how to hit a certain type of golf shot by changing their set up in a video earlier this year. Domino’s and AI create national dish-inspired pizza toppings for Eurovision final
Domino’s and AI create national dish-inspired pizza toppings for Eurovision final
Forget pizza pie…this is pizza AI! Domino’s reveals national dish-inspired pizza toppings for countries competing in the Eurovision final. But they have all been made with artificial intelligence. As the stand-in host nation for war-torn Ukraine, the UK - with Mae Muller singing for glory - has been given a Beef roast dinner speciality pizza. It comes with potatoes on a bed of gravy, covered in horseradish sauce. France has Coq au Vin braised chicken, with diced potatoes and rosemary garnish. Germany’s toppings are Bratwurst sausage loaded over chips, drizzled with ketchup and mayonnaise. There is Carbonara pasta, bordered with pepperoni slices, on a pizza for Italy. Paella with clams and prawns – finished with a sprinkle of spring onions, is dedicated to Spain. Sweden has a fish with sliced tomatoes, chopped radishes and onions topping. Ukraine has a trademark Chicken Kyiv, dressed in lemon and dill. Meanwhile Australia - in Eurovision since 2015 - has Fairy Bread, an old-fashioned Aussie snack made from white bread, butter and ‘hundreds and thousands’ sprinkles. A Domino’s spokesperson said: “With Eurovision being one of the busiest nights of the year for Domino’s, the nation’s favourite pizza brand, has cooked up a treat for the senses. “By challenging AI to imagine what a limited-edition pizza for all the favourite competing countries would look like. “Domino’s set AI system MidJourney to work, curating completely unedited Eurovision-inspired pizza toppings for The Big Five countries and a few other nations. “Passing the reins to AI, pizzas generated varied from a somewhat delicious looking Roast Dinner to Carbonara and a clam and prawn loaded Paella pizza. “Signature dishes were also generated for host nation Ukraine in the form of Chicken Kyiv pizza. “And Australia, to see what the country that has competed in the competition since 2015 – to everyone’s bewilderment – would serve up. “And it’s Fairy Bread pizza. “A country and party staple of bread spread with margarine and covered in hundreds and thousands.” Sam Wilson, AI mastermind at Domino’s said: “Pizza brings everyone together, just like Eurovision. “So we challenged AI to generate the perfect pizza for each nation. It’s no surprise the classic Sunday Roast was Britain’s pizza of choice, but we didn’t expect Fairy Bread for Australia. “We’re rooting for Mae Muller this weekend and look forward to seeing her waving the flag for the UK. “But we won’t be giving AI a role in our kitchen just yet.” The Eurovision contest saw over 161 million people worldwide tune in last year. With an estimated 8.93 million people in the UK watching the finale ceremony in 2022. Have your say in our news democracy.
