The researcher who invented the term 'cisgender' has hit back at "cowardly" Elon Musk for calling the term a slur. 'Cis' or 'cisgender' was coined by now-retired researcher Dana Defosse. They are used to describe someone whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth. It is not offensive or intended to be used as an insult. Defosse first used the term in a 1994 internet forum, before being added to the Oxford English Dictionary much later in 2015. In an essay for HuffPost, Defosse explained how she invented the term: "I knew that in chemistry, molecules with atoms grouped on the same side are labelled with the Latin prefix ‘cis–,’ while molecules with atoms grouped on opposite sides are referred to as ‘trans–.’ So, cisgender. It seemed like a no-brainer," she wrote. On Wednesday (21 June), Musk responded to a user who claimed to have been harassed by trans rights activists. Twitter user James Esses said he "rejected" the terms after receiving "a slew of messages from trans activists calling me ‘cissy’ and telling me that I am ‘cis’ ‘whether or not I like it.’" In response, Musk tweeted: "Repeated, targeted harassment against any account will cause the harassing accounts to receive, at minimum, temporary suspensions. The words “cis” or “cisgender” are considered slurs on this platform." "The fact is, whether or not somebody identifies as cisgender doesn’t negate the fact that cisgender identity is a valid construct. It exists, and it has meaning in how we operate in the world." The retired researcher went on to call his censorship attempt "cowardly". "Banning use of a word that’s part of our daily vocabulary around the world, that appears in the Oxford English Dictionary, it’s a cowardly and futile attempt to censor an idea which is, in my opinion, way bigger and more enduring than anything Musk could hope to offer," she added. Data collected by NASA’s Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) lander has left experts puzzled. The length of every day is shortening by a fraction of a millisecond each year, and experts don’t know exactly why it’s happening. The findings also showed that the planet is 'wobbling' in an unusual way due to the molten metal “sloshing” in its core. Apple has finally unveiled a new improvement to its autocorrect feature, much to the enjoyment of expletive lovers. On Monday (6 June), the tech company announced a number of software updates will soon be available to iPhone users as part of Apple’s new iOS 17 operating system. While speaking at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in California, senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi shared that Apple will also upgrade the autocorrect feature that annoyingly changes one of the most common swear words to “ducking”. “In those moments where you just want to type a ducking word, well, the keyboard will learn it, too,” he said. The upgraded autocorrect feature will be assisted by artificial intelligence (AI). According to TechCrunch, the “Transformer” AI model will accurately predict the next words and phrases iPhone users might send. Over time, the new autocorrect feature will learn to predict words that are used most frequently, including swear words. The autocorrect change is expected to drop alongside Apple’s new iOS 17, which is expected to be available as a public beta in July and a general release to come out in September. Autocorrect has been a longstanding feature of Apple products, automatically substituting corrections for mistakes in spelling or grammar. But the “ducking” substitution has long been a source of annoyance for those who’ve had to rewrite texts, particularly when they may already be wanting to express a degree of frustration. The autocorrect feature wasn’t the only upgrade Apple announced at its WWDC event on Monday. In iOS 17, iPhones will also come with new mental health features, in the form of a journal and mood tracking tools that will integrate with the Health app. The Sensitive Content Warning feature will warn adult users about nude photos and videos with a pop-up asking if they want to see the content, and the new “Check In” lets users tell friends or family members they’ve reached their destination safely. Perhaps the biggest announcement was the company’s new $3,499 (£2,800) Vision Pro headset, which combines virtual reality and augmented reality using its own software – VisionOS. The new virtual reality headset will allow people to see apps projected on top of the room around them, allowing apps to be “freed from the confines of a display”. The headset is made with glass on the front and inside, as well as an aluminium frame and a soft band that wraps around the head. Vision Pro users will be able to sit in their living room, for example, and see their apps projected in front of them, on top of their coffee table, or while doing the dishes. The Apple Vision Pro headset won’t be available to purchase until early 2024. Twitter is refusing to stand by a $1 billion contract with Google to use its cloud hosting services, according to reports. Elon Musk’s company is in the process of moving away from Google Cloud before the contract expires on 30 June, Platformer reported, leaving the social media firm’s trust and safety teams in peril. The move appears to be part of radical cost-cutting measures that have been underway since Mr Musk’s takeover of Twitter in October 2022, which has already seen thousands of employees laid off and a reduction in infrastructure spending. The deal with Google Cloud relates to hosting services, which include protecting accounts and fighting spam on Twitter. The effort to move to a different platform is reportedly “running behind schedule”, which could potentially impact Twitter’s ability to detect and remove spam and child sexual abuse material. Twitter did not respond to a request for comment – the company’s PR team was effectively eliminated during the lay-offs – while Google is also yet to respond. A separate report from The Information last month claimed that Twitter also delayed payments to Amazon Web Services. The latest issues come after internal documents revealed that Twitter’s advertising revenue is down by more than half since Mr Musk’s takeover. The company’s main revenue stream was initially hit by advertisers withdrawing over concerns related to the direction of the platform and its leadership, though Mr Musk claimed in April that “almost all advertisers have come back or said they are going to come back”. Twitter’s valuation since Mr Musk bought the company for $44 billion has dropped to around $15 billion, according to estimates from investment firm Fidelity.
